Camera roll exploration 1
Today, I am going to dive into the depths of my camera roll and to find a peculiar photo that may be of interest to those reading this. If I find this fun, I may do it again sometime.
Today, I will be looking into a very interesting photo and providing some analysis into why it is significant in today’s society.
The Slumber
This photo is so bittersweet to me. The feeling it evokes is quite conflicting. It’s like eating a pizza crust first. It’s definitely not explicitly wrong, but it certainly isn’t wrong. It might make you slightly uncomfortable, but you must realize that the harmlessness of the act makes it to pass judgement. Like, what is she really doing wrong? Sure, sleeping on the floor may not be the most sanitary thing, but it’s not hurting anyone. No one is displaced. No one is attacked. Not a soul is hindered in any way. She shares no blame in the hardships of the airport, and thus one cannot look upon her as they would one who does wrong. She is not doing right, but like I said, it’d be very hard to say that she is doing anything wrong. The woman needs a break, who are we to attempt to interrupt that? Yet, if I were to show this photo to someone, my description of it would not sound anything like “look at this courageous woman who dared to stand up to those who think it’s wrong to sleep on the floor at the airport.” It’d probably be a lot more like “look at this woman who fell asleep on the floor lol.” I guess I wouldn’t need to say anything commending this woman’s actions. As I’ve said, she isn’t doing the right thing. I’m sure most of us can agree that sleeping on the floor at the airport is a little bit odd. To this point, I must argue that some level of social norms can be helpful for establishing any sort of “normalcy” in a society. Of course, normalcy can lead to an increased blandness in popular culture, but it also makes people feel more comfortable when they are ultimately forced to conform to the society which molds them. It is this idea that drives my desire for that woman to be revered for her contradictory actions. Let the bittersweet feeling of this photo come from the hero unrecognized and not from pity for a fool. Don’t let the world you live in deter you from staying true to yourself. Don’t cede your soul to the man. Be a leader. Be an inspiration. Be you—you’re wonderful.
